LOTUS LEAF · TINY SURFACES
The leaf that lets rain do the work
How can rolling water help a leaf stay clean?
01 · NOTICE THE NATURE
What’s really
happening?
A lotus leaf has a microscopically rough surface with water-repellent wax. Water forms droplets rather than spreading easily across it. When the droplets roll off, they can pick up loose dirt and carry it away.
02 · BORROW AN IDEA
From nature
to design.
Researchers at IIT Bombay developed a coating based on this “lotus effect.” They combined water-repellent ingredients with tiny particles and tested the coating on materials including glass, fabric and wood.
THE IDEA TO TAKE AWAY
A surface can control how water behaves. Tiny details can matter as much as the shape you can see.
A useful detail
Here, “self-cleaning” means that moving water helps remove dirt. It does not mean every stain disappears by itself, or that every leaf behaves like a lotus leaf.
